16 years since Israel’s ‘withdrawal’ from Gaza

On this day, 16 years ago, September 12, 2005, the last soldier left the Gaza Strip and evacuated with them the settlers who had ended the occupation of the Strip from 1967 to 2005.
During their occupation of Gaza, Israel owned 34% of the land and controlled key fertile farmland, groundwater and the coast.
But during the confrontation in the intifada, the settlements were subjected to fierce and stubborn resistance, leading to Israel declaring its intention to withdraw from the settlements of the Gaza Strip and dismantle all of its presence there. On August 15, 2005, Israel began its “withdrawal” from the Gaza Strip, which it had occupied since the 1967 Six-Day War.

Last week’s prison break had thrown Israel into confusion as six inmates forced their way out of Gilboa maximum security prison and managed to escape without detection. Of the six, Israeli authorities have so far re-arrested four of the detainees – Islamic Jihad members Mahmoud Aradeh and Yakub Kadari; Zakaria Zubeidi, commander of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, and Mohammed Aradeh, Mahmoud Aradeh’s younger brother.
